Definition of Bullying
In our culture, the term bullying can sometimes be used as a synonym for mean. True bullying is different than the age appropriate conflicts students encounter as they improve their social skills. At the elementary level each year, we cover the difference between: rude, mean, and bullying to help students understand the differences and how to respond to each situation.
The Olweus definition:
Bullying is when someone repeatedly and on purpose says or does mean or hurtful things to another person who has a hard time defending himself or herself.

Anti-Bullying in Lead-Deadwood School District
The Olweus Bullying Prevention Program has been utilized in the school district since 2011. It is part of the district's strategic plan to improve the educational climate for all buildings. This researched based curriculum is delivered with slight variation at each building, with teachers being the main facilitators. The program provides guidelines for staff to address bullying when it occurs including follow up recommendations for both students who did the bullying and students who were the victims.
