A Little About Your School CounselorMy name is Amanda Bender. I earned my masters degree in school counseling from SDSU. I am working towards certification as a School Based - Registered Play Therapist. I serve on the SD School Counselor Association Board and am a member of the American School Counselor Association. Being involved helps me make sure I'm up to date on all the latest school counseling techniques and resources!
I have been with the Lead Deadwood School district since 2012. The first 4 years I was at the high school and greatly enjoyed helping students prepare themselves for their future! I transitioned to the elementary school in 2016. I enjoy being able help students improve social/emotional skills and hope to add some career readiness focus to the elementary level. When I'm not at work, you will likely run into me around town or at a sporting event with my family. I am blessed to have amazing friends and family in my life and do what I can to spend time with them as much as possible. |

Whats the Big Deal about
School Counselors Anyway?
As professional school counselors we have standards to meet, much like teachers. Our national organization is ASCA (American School Counselor Association). There are three domains the national model has us focus on: social/emotional, academic, and career. We lalso have a code of ethics that guides us in our decision making processes. If you would like to know more about the role of the school counselor I would be happy to answer any questions! I've also provided a link to the ASCA website below.
